Introducing the Illustris Project: Simulating the coevolution of dark and visible matter in the Universe

چکیده
We introduce the Illustris Project, a series of large-scale hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation. The highest resolution simulation, Illustris-1, covers a volume of (106.5Mpc), has a dark mass resolution of 6.26× 10 M , and an initial baryonic matter mass resolution of 1.26× 10 M . At z = 0 gravitational forces are softened on scales of 710 pc, and the smallest hydrodynamical gas cells have an extent of 48 pc. We follow the dynamical evolution of 2 × 1820 resolution elements and in addition passively evolve 1820 Monte Carlo tracer particles reaching a total particle count of more than 18 billion. The galaxy formation model includes: primordial and metal-line cooling with self-shielding corrections, stellar evolution, stellar feedback, gas recycling, chemical enrichment, supermassive black hole growth, and feedback from active galactic nuclei. Here we describe the simulation suite, and contrast basic predictions of our model for the present day galaxy population with observations of the local universe. At z = 0 our simulation volume contains about 40, 000 well-resolved galaxies covering a diverse range of morphologies and colours including early-type, late-type and irregular galaxies. The simulation reproduces reasonably well the cosmic star formation rate density, the galaxy luminosity function, and baryon conversion efficiency at z = 0. It also qualitatively captures the impact of galaxy environment on the red fractions of galaxies. The internal velocity structure of selected well-resolved disk galaxies obeys the stellar and baryonic Tully-Fisher relation together with flat circular velocity curves. In the well-resolved regime the simulation reproduces the observed mix of early-type and late-type galaxies. Our model predicts a halo mass dependent impact of baryonic effects on the halo mass function and the masses of haloes caused by feedback from supernova and active galactic nuclei.

Formation of Large Structures in the Acceleration Universe with a Hybrid Expansion Law
In the current paper, we have studied the effect of dark energy on for-mation where dark energy exists in the background. For this purpose, we used both WMAP9 and Planck data to study how the radius changes with redshift in these mod-els. We used different data sets to fix the cosmological parameters to obtain a solution for a spherical region under collapse. The mechanism of structure formation f...

There are several observational evidences for the existence of dark matter in the universe. More than about 90% of the matter in the universe is in a form which is not directly observable. If the dark matter is in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) or cosmions, part of it is captured by the Sun, other stars, and even planets. In this paper, some basic ideas of the cosmio...
متن کاملLarge-scale mass distribution in the Illustris simulation
Observations at low redshifts thus far fail to account for all of the baryons expected in the Universe according to cosmological constraints. A large fraction of the baryons presumably resides in a thin and warm–hot medium between the galaxies, where they are difficult to observe due to their low densities and high temperatures. Cosmological simulations of structure formation can be used to ver...
متن کاملThe mass profile of the Milky Way to the virial radius from the Illustris simulation
We use particle data from the Illustris simulation, combined with individual kinematic constraints on the mass of the Milky Way (MW) at specific distances from the Galactic Centre, to infer the radial distribution of the MW’s dark matter halo mass. Our method allows us to convert any constraint on the mass of the MWwithin a fixed distance to a full circular velocity profile to the MW’s virial r...

A new surface energy-value for dark matter is calculated, derivated from a perspective of a “higher order universe“. A universe of dark energy, darkand visible matter, and a dark energy force.
